Winter ONEderland Party #1

When planning Elyse's party, Hubby & I quickly realized that we wouldn't be able to have her big party on her actual birthday since it was a weeknight and her bedtime varies between 7:30-8:00...there just wouldn't be enough time for dinner, cake & presents before we had a very tired little girl on our hands.  So...we decided to have two birthday celebrations, with one being much smaller than the other.

On the morning of Elyse's birthday we actually woke up to a sick little girl.  She had some sort of quick little stomach bug, never ran a fever, and acted fine...other than the fact that she didn't keep anything down for the first half of the day.  She didn't get to have her birthday breakfast of waffles & blueberries, but Hubby & I still gave her the presents we bought for her. We've decided that until our children actually ask for certain things, we're going to handle birthdays & Christmas like this:  we'll pick out one big present together & then the rest of the budget will be divided in half between us.  I got to shop on my own & Hubby shopped on his own...that way at least someone other than Elyse is surprised when all the packages are opened.

We bought Elyse a Mamas & Papas rocking elephant & it's absolutely perfect.  She's still a little unsure about it, but I think in time she will really learn to love it.

Elyse's pile of presents from Momma & Daddy
Daddy started her Dr. Seuss book collection with The Grinch & a collection of 5 other favorites.
He also bought her a super neat water table that will be perfect playing next Spring & Summer...one of the downsides of a December baby, you have to buy stuff in advance!
Checking out her elephant...
She likes it  for now!
I got Elyse a Ralph Lauren outfit so she can dress like her daddy & a tiny birthstone/pearl bracelet with a letter "E" charm.  I wanted something that she would always have as a keepsake of her first birthday.

Elyse & I spent the day at home but made the short drive to have lunch with daddy.  Then it was back home to prep for her first official party.  We had invited the grandparents over for a casual dinner of pizza & salad so they could go ahead and give Elyse her presents from them.  This was a GREAT decision, because both sets of grandparents might have gone a tad bit overboard.  She had quite the stack of presents to open just from them!
Enjoying a piece of white cake on her birthday
Trying to figure out this present opening thing
She's got it!
She got some really great toys from Papa & Gigi and Pappy & Mamaw..some more new books, clothes, 2 new winter coats, Leopard print Ugg boots, Pink ostrich cowboy boots, some new pjs, a vacuum cleaner, some Melissa & Doug puzzles, a Little People house, & her own red piano.  She loved it all!
Playing a tune for us!
I think she liked it!
Momma & Daddy with the birthday girl!
Overall her birthday was the perfect day, even if she was a little sick to start with!  I'm so glad we decided to invite the grandparents' over so we could do their gifts separate from everyone else...this gave her time to react and play with those gifts without getting overwhelmed with all the people & stimulation.  I can't believe that her first birthday is already in the history books...time to start planning for next year!

Elyse Love ~ 12 Months

I can't believe this will be my last monthly update for Elyse Ann!  Of course I'll still do updates and my blog will still mainly focus on her...but the sticker pictures are finished.  ;o(

Weight/Height: We go to the doctor for her one year check up this morning. We'll get her official measurements then.  However, I would say that we are still probably around 28-30" tall & she weighs about 20 lbs.  She is eating table food like crazy but since last month I feel like her face has thinned up a bit...probably from all that moving since she never sits still for very long!
Clothes: She is wearing all 12 month things now, except for any new sleepers where we've moved her to 18 month so she can kick her little legs.  I'm afraid that in the future she's going to outgrow her clothing because of length...which makes some things seem really baggy!  Anything we buy her for the Spring will be 18 month size...just so we can get lots of wear out of it!  We have moved onto size 4 diapers and should be at that point for awhile.  She is wearing size 4 shoes.
Food:  This girl is such a good eater!  We certainly have our days when she decides she doesn't like to eat, but then she wakes up the next day & will eat practically anything you put in front of her.  Yogurt & blueberries or raspberries is still the favorite for breakfast; although I think that scrambled eggs might be a close second once I start giving eggs to her more often.  She LOVES cheese & bread so we have to be careful to give her any veggies before we offer those things or she will never eat her veggies.  She also still loves her fruit, but really just wants to eat whatever we are eating.   She is eating pretty much anything now & after her appointment tomorrow I plan to start transitioning her to whole milk at least during the daytime.  We'll see how that goes.  As of now she is still nursing or taking a bottle of expressed milk 4 times a day, although the quantities for her 2 daytime feedings have greatly decreased from what they used to be.

She also is a little bit like her momma and once she's hungry, she's hungry.  She becomes a little bit of a grumpy bear if she gets overly hungry so we've learned that she needs a scheduled snack before lunch and before dinner.

Sleep: Overall sleep has been wonderful.  She is going to be anytime between 7:30-8:00 and waking sometime between 6:30-7:00 most mornings.  For the most part she seems to only want to sleep 11 hours a night, so regardless of when we put her down she will wake up at the 11 hour mark.  She is still taking two naps a day for a total of about 3 hours & goes down without a fight.  She was a little under the weather on her birthday and I think she's working on some new teeth so that has made for some difficult nights recently, but we'll get back on track.

She is currently still sleeping with her pacifier...two actually.  She sometimes manages to toss one out of the crib so we put another one in their for backup.  We'll work on that after the first of the year, but right now her sleep is so wonderful that we don't want to rock the boat with the holidays coming up.
Activity:  Activity defines her.  She is EVERYWHERE!  Nick installed more child safety locks in the past month so now she only has certain drawers that she is allowed to open, and subsequently empty all over the floor.  She still prefers to crawl, but ladies & gentleman...WE HAVE A WALKER!!!  She took her first steps right at about 4:45 the day before her first birthday.  Which is a good thing, because her daddy had a deadline and we might have to kick her out of the house...ha!  Just kidding.  Everyone says that everything will change now that she can walk but honestly I'm not sure how that could be.  She reaches for everything, pulls up on everything, and gets into anything & everything she wants to even now.  I could be proven wrong, but for now it seems like she's just as dangerous crawling!
Personality: We have a little ham on our hands!  She laughs & smiles & giggles and warms the hearts of everyone around her. She is consistently a little quiet when in a new place or around a lot of people, but quickly warms up & plays with whoever is nearby.  Church nursery, family gatherings, restaurants, small group...it doesn't seem to matter, she's happy wherever as long as she feels comfortable with those who are around her.  Thankfully she's also incredibly flexible and doesn't seem to mind if she's on the go.  I'm so thankful that she will go to sleep in the car & transfer to her crib without hardly a peep...makes things so much easier!
Communication: Along with our ham comes a little talker...which may have been passed down from her momma. She talks all the time and we are beginning to understand her more & more. While she won't say most words on command she does say several words: Momma, Da (Dad), Dog, Uh-Oh.  She is also starting to say things at the right times that sound like Byebye & Thank you.  She has also started to initiate communication by pointing or waving at people or things without being prompted to do so.  It's so nice that she's able to start telling us & showing us what she wants.

And reading...oh reading.  This girl LOVES books.  She will literally sit & read a book to us, complete with turning the pages & saying something different as she goes through each page.  Sometimes we get the biggest fits when we try to take a book away from her because it's time to go or time to eat....we'll also be saving the books for last when it comes to Christmas presents, otherwise she won't pay attention to anything else.

Likes:
~books. I really think this girl is going to be a reader, which means she may be a bookworm like her momma; but there are certainly worse things that she could love!
~Peek-A-Boo/Hide-N-Seek.  We get the biggest giggles and laughs from her when we peek around a corner and try to hide...I love the sound of her little hands slapping the floor as she crawls to try and find us.
~moving.   Unfortunately I think that cuddle time is for the most part...over.  She will come and sit in your lap for a brief moment but then she's down and on the move again.
~food.  See above...if you're eating it, she wants it.
~Cheerios. Man, don't try to take her snack-catcher of Cheerios away, the water works are definitely guaranteed to start!
~Emptying things. She loves to pull books off of shelves, empty her dishes drawer, pull clothes off the couch, or pull clothes out of a laundry basket.

Dislikes:
~diaper changes: this is still a daily battle.  Thankfully she still fits on her changing pad which keeps her somewhat confined because she just rolls into the back of the hutch.  However, I hate having to pin her down or making her cry just to change her diaper or her clothes.  Many times this has become a two person job & Hubby & I try to entertain her while we somehow manage to change her.
12 Month Milestones:
~First Thanksgiving-November 22

~First Temper Tantrum-November 28 when I wouldn't let her play with her Christmas tree
~First Steps-December 12
~8th tooth came through week of Dec 9

& this is what I dealt with as our photo shoot ended...
Look momma...books!

I think I should try to get closer...

This is pretty close...but I think I can do better...

See...if I put my knee up on the chair I can get a lot closer!  Cue for Mom to stop taking pictures and come get me down!

Weekend Rewind~Elyse the Birthday Girl!

Whew...it's been a crazy last several days.  I feel like we had about 3 full days of non-stop birthday madness & thankfully today we have some time to just stop & breathe.  Elyse's 1st birthday was on Thursday, my mom & I decorated on Friday & then had her big Winter Onederland party on Saturday.

I'll have full recaps of all the parties in a few days once I can get all my pictures organized!  We hired a family friend to take pictures of the big day yesterday so I'll do a full post of all the celebrations once I have those images.

But for now...just a few snippets from our busy busy weekend celebrating our favorite girl!

Friday night we grabbed a quick dinner out and then had some family play time with all of Elyse's new toys & books...Hubby & I need to practice up, Dr. Seuss books are COMPLICATED to read!  ha!

Breakfast before the party...her first experience with waffles & the jury is still out on whether she likes them or not...

The main table all decorated for her party

Her precious smash cake that I could not have happier with...thanks Star Cakes!

Her cupcake toppers via Etsy

Her Rock & Roll motorcycle from Uncle Nick & Aunt Millie...which she loves and also dances along with!
Today we headed to church, had a quick lunch with my in-laws and our poor baby girl has been out ever since.  She's been napping for 2 1/2 hours with no end in sight....I think we have one tuckered out princess!  The weather is gorgeous today so we're hoping for a nice family walk once she wakes up.  We have a fairly relaxed week with not a lot of evening plans and then Christmas festivities start up again on Saturday evening. Christmas is going to be so fun this year...being a Momma makes everything so much better!

And I know you'll all be waiting on pins & needles...but more incredible birthday cuteness is soon to come!

Elyse Ann...You're 1!

Today my baby turns 1...366 days ago (this was a leap year), our precious baby girl entered this world & things have been exciting & wonderful & scary & exhausting & beautiful every day since!

Elyse Ann,

My precious daughter it seems like just yesterday you came into this world with some dramatic flair, but yet it's so difficult for your daddy & momma to ever imagine life without you.  You have brought such incredibly joy into our lives and there have been so many times where we have wondered what we ever did with all of our time before you arrived.  Man, we wasted so much time!

You bring such life & happiness to everyone you encounter & I pray that you would always find the joy in life as you seem to find it every day.  Your little crinkly nosed grin may be the death of us, as I'm tempted to do absolutely anything you want when you grin at me.  I have enjoyed every stage before this one and I'm sure I'll enjoy almost every stage in the future, but I've quickly decided that I'm not really a tiny baby person.  I love that every day we can interact with each other & learn from each other.  I love that we are beginning to understand each other more & more & that when you learn something new your eyes light up with such wonder.

On those days when I feel like I don't get to spend as much time with you, I have this desire to go grab you from your crib after you're asleep and just look at you...but I don't because we're certainly enjoying the fact that you like to sleep.  I treasure our days at home together & I treasure even more those nights at home as family when we can simply play in the floor together and laugh & giggle as you show your true personality.

God is going to do some amazing things with your precious life and I only hope that I can guide you in the right direction.  He loves you more than even your momma & daddy do & I pray that his love will flow through you and out to those all around you.  In those times when you feel like no one understands & that life is so hard, remember that God is right there beside you with his arms open wide just willing you to take a step in his direction.  Fall on Him, and into Him and it's in Him that you will truly find peace.

Baby girl, I pray that you would be a friend to those who truly need a friend, confident in yourself and your abilities, and respectful to everyone around you.  Your momma & daddy love you more than I can possibly put into words & I hope that you never question our love for you.  You are truly the best thing that has ever happened to me...you are my little toot, my baby girl, my daughter.
Happy 1st Birthday Elyse Ann!

Love always & forever,

Your momma

Santa Claus Attempt #2~Church Christmas Party

At our church Christmas party each year, two of our active members dress up as Santa & Mrs. Claus, lead us in Christmas carols, and take pictures with all the kiddos.  We were hoping this Santa experience might be a little better for Elyse since Mrs. Claus is actually a lady who watches her in the nursery quite often...no such luck.

Santa walked up to her and was 5 feet away & Elyse started screaming...and then as we walked on the stage Elyse was puckering up before I ever even got the chance to put her in Mrs. Claus's lap!

We have one more Santa attempt coming probably on Sunday...we'll see if 3rd time is a charm!  I'm certainly not holding my breath!

Weekend Rewind~3 Christmas Gatherings Down...

Whew...it was a crazy weekend!  And honestly, the rest of December doesn't look much different.  But we're having tons of fun & lots of quality time with family so for the most part all the business is worth it.

Friday evening we had absolutely nothing planned, which we were all SO thankful for!  We had a nice dinner at home & after Elyse went to bed Hubby & I had a wrapping party.  We were able to get all of the presents wrapped for our family and put under the tree.  Basically all that's left is the wrapping for Hubby, myself, & Elyse...one thing to check off the list!
Elyse was helping her Daddy read "Llama, Llama, Holiday Drama"
Saturday morning Hubby had to work so I rode down with him to spend some time with my mom.  It's kind of crazy, but she & I don't get a TON of quality time together.  Yes, she keeps Elyse so I see her in passing several times a day when I work...but we don't get to hang out together.  So, we worked on a project for Elyse's birthday party all while just enjoying each other's company.

Saturday afternoon Elyse & I took a nap before the big festivities for the evening.  Elyse was headed to spend the evening with my brother & sil while Hubby & I were headed out for our office Christmas party.
Momma & Elyse (not sure what is going on with my left leg!  ha!

All the ladies...my momma, myself, Delma, my Grandma, & my cousin Kay

My Momma & Daddy
We had a fabulous dinner...even if there was a minor or major snafu with some of our orders.  Thankfully the restaurant tried their best to make it right & it was still a wonderful evening.  And what could make any night better...walking into my brother & sil's house to find this...our precious princess all tuckered out & ready for bed!
Sleepy Princess
Sunday was a crazy day from start to finish.  We had church in the morning & then quickly headed over to my in-laws house for our first official family Christmas of 2012.  We had a yummy lunch, a fun gift card exchange & lots of fun with family.  I barely snapped any pictures, maybe I need to pass the camera off to Hubby next time.
Elyse practicing up on her opening skills...
After our Christmas gathering, it was time to head back to church. For the past few years our church has "adopted" over 100 foster kids in our county and we provide a gift for each of them. We collect the gifts at our church and then the presents are distributed to the foster parents so they can be wrapped in their own wrapping paper & placed under the tree as if the parents had purchased the gifts. This is such an awesome ministry that we are always so excited to be a part of!
All 100+ presents ready to be delivered!
Elyse was all smiles...our little ham!

Elyse even did ok on stage while the children sang Away in a Manger...
And for the rest of the night you'll just have to wait until tomorrow...Santa Experience #2...
